First Celebration and Press Conference at the Sun Island Centre

24.05.2011

The structural work at the Sun Island Centre, the unique Austrian psychosocial rehabilitation centre for children and youngsters suffering from cancer, was completed on May 20th and the first celebration was held there. Heide Janik, the chairwoman of the Children and Youth Cancer Help Salzburg and the building owner pointed out the energy which emanates from the stillness of this timber house.

Also, the architect, Volker Hagn, Salzburg, points out the palpable quality of the construction: “Houses can be built of timber which are timeless, independent of construction styles and fashion trends and which create quality space pleasing all the senses. A timber house is a store of energy from the sun and therefore a place where you can tank up new energy to live.”

Walter Meiberger emphasised “that the planning and preparation of the work increasingly becomes one of the most important success factors in a high quality timber construction. But also the willingness, the commitment to the common goal is of essential importance and promotes sustainable and innovative solutions.”

Invitations to press interviews involving great media attention were received as early as the morning of Thursday 19th May. In the afternoon a special event was organised and the project was explained in terms of its architecture, timber construction and static aspects to architects, civil engineers, as well as the managers of construction companies.

Not yet fully financed
The calculated total costs of the construction amounted to about EUR 4.6 million. EUR 2.6 million has been raised from donations to date and EUR 2.0 million still remains to be raised.
